Choirs and Music
Choral music at All Saints is provided by the All Saints Choir and the All Saints Singers and, since 2019, the Saint Hildegard Singers, who play their respective roles in contributing to the unique and world-renowned tradition of Anglican choral music by presenting anthems, motets and service settings from all periods of music. Under the direction of a professional musician (Director of Music), the choirs perform music to reflect the seasons of the Church Year, following the changing moods of the liturgical calendar from Advent to Christmas, Lent to Easter, and so on throughout the Church Year. In particular, the Nine Lessons and Carols at Christmas is a popular favourite with the congregation and the wider community. The choirs endeavour to maintain a high standard and commitment of which the church can be justifiably proud.
The Saint Hildegard Singers
A choir for girls and young women aged around 7-20. They sang at their first service on Sunday 1st September 2019. We welcome enquiries from interested applicants.
Saint Hildegard is in one of the more interesting, colourful and influential figures of the medieval church. Born around 1098, Hildegard of Bingen was abbess of her Benedictine monastery, writer, philosopher, mystic and visionary. She corresponded with popes and emperors. Hildegard also wrote on medical and scientific matters and she is considered to be the founder of scientific natural history in Germany. But for our interest, she was also known as a composer. Some sixty-nine of her works survive. This is among the largest repertoires among medieval composers. In recent times her compositions have been revived to much interest. She died on 17th September 1179. In 2012 Hildegard was declared a Doctor of the Church by Benedict XVI in recognition of her scholarly and theological works. Hildegard will be a worthy patron for our new choir.
All Saints Choir
The All Saints Choir of men and boys was founded in the mid-Nineteenth Century and has maintained an unbroken history to this day. Boys from local and other schools are welcome to join the choir from the age of seven onward. No previous experience is needed. They receive an outstanding music education and professional vocal training as they learn and perform a wide range of works by composers from all periods of music. Currently all boys in the choir play an instrument, though this is not a requirement. Boys are paid a bursary each term rated according to experience. The ‘back rows’ of the choir consist of men and choral scholars, including professional, semi-professional, and student-age singers. Scholarships are available for men in the choir, aimed mainly at those who are not in full-time employment.

All Saints Singers
The All Saints Singers sing mainly at the monthly Choral Evensong as well as on other certain occasions. This choir includes girls, women and men from the parish and further afield, and some men from the parish choir. Some sight-reading ability is expected, and a little advance preparation is often needed to complement limited rehearsal time before the service.
Occasionally visiting choirs sing for services at All Saints, and this is welcomed by the church, as it provides both additional variety in repertoire for the parish and an opportunity for others to sing in the large, historic and beautiful church building.
Enquiries about membership of all choirs are welcomed by the Director of Music, Mr John O'Donnell, [email protected]
